I don’t remember there being any pathway for it to fall into the pan in that area of the head. There’s an oil return path at the back of the passenger head and front of driver side head. When you say you heard it clank, was the sound from the head or did it sound like in the oil pan? I’m thinking it’s very much still in the head. You will have to get it out. There’s plenty of little spaces it can end up and you will have to fish it out. Removing the cam would make it easier, but I’m assuming you don’t want to do that (neither would I). The borescope will likely be very useful. Make sure you soak up a lot of the oil so it can’t hide submerged.
